Lories, Lorikeets and Loriculus

Black Capped Lory
Black Capped Lory (Lorius lory) is a colourful, stocky and a relatively robust lory. There are seven subspecies of this bird. These birds have a smart and energetic disposition and often show a clownish behaviour, which makes them a much loved pet the world over.

Black Winged Lory
The Black Winged Lory (Eos cyanogenia) is also known as Biak Red Lory or Blue Cheeked Lory. It has a small population that is undergoing a continuing decline due to loss of lowland forest, which is its natural habitat.

Black lory
Black Lory (Chalcopsitta atra), also known as Rajah Lory or Red-Quilled Lory, is a medium-sized blackish parrot that is widely regarded as one of the gentlest, friendliest and most playful Lories.

Blue Crowned Lory
The Blue Crowned Hanging Parrot (Loriculus galgulus) is a tiny and luminous parrot which roosts upside down. It enjoys taking a bath in the rain in the same position. It is the only species of birds that sleeps inverted. It has a variety of different calls and can also imitate noises.

Blue Streaked Lory
The Blue Streaked Lory (Eos reticulata) is also known as the Blue Necked Lory. They inhabit primary and secondary forest, coconut plantations and mangroves. These birds are social and gregarious. Large-scale habitat degradation and trapping have dwindled their numbers.

Cardinal Lory
The Cardinal Lory (Pseudeos cardinalis) has a unique, exotic and beautiful plumage. These parrots thrive in humid forests, mangroves, coconut plantations, and coastal woodlands, where they feed and nest in tree canopies. They are known to travel between many of the tiny islands that surround their habitat.

Chattering Lory
The Chattering Lory (Lorius garrulus) occurs most commonly in montane forest. It is a canopy species, typically nesting in holes of very tall trees. This spectacular red parrot with forest-green wings is undergoing a rapid population decline as a result of habitat loss and trade exploitation.

Dusky Lory
The Dusky Lory (Pseudeos fuscata) is also known as Banded Lory or White Rumped Lory. These birds roost communally in groups of up to a thousand birds. Their calls are heard as harsh and grating screeches. Endowed with a friendly and very playful personality, coupled with extravagant looks, these birds are regarded as excellent pets.
